Polygonum is an herb traditionally used to treat pain and inflammation from traumatic injuries, as well as infections that cause phlegm, mucus, pus, or discharge. In modern research, Polygonum has also been shown to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in vivo (including decreasing certain cytokines); these effects are believed to be primarily due to a compound called Resveratrol. Polygonum extracts have also been shown to possess antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties.
