How Healthy is Your Brain? – Epigenetics and The Aging Process

Most people know that there are ways to test the individual parts of your body to determine how well they’re functioning, but did you know it’s possible to test your brain too?

In our new blog series of The Rezilir Way, we will address several methods of testing your brain’s health, cognition, and even “age.”

Testing of DNA molecules

With multiple options available, testing isn’t just for older adults or those concerned with diseases like Alzheimer’s or Dementia. These tests can be used on people of all ages. Once testing has been completed and results have been reviewed by your healthcare professional, there are options for keeping your brain and body young, recovering and improving cognition, and even reversing the signs of aging at a cellular level. You can go to the gym and eat healthy meals to keep your body physically fit, but you can also take steps to keep your cells in shape as well

When trying to prevent the loss of function as you age with any part of your body, it’s always best to start as early as possible. It’s easy to know how old you are chronologically, but do you know your biological age? Knowing the health and “age” of your brain and body earlier in life can arm you with the information that you need to ensure you’re protecting and taking care of yourself. You can improve your brain and body’s health, functioning, and essentially reverse the aging process while safeguarding yourself against aging further or faster.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll go over methods of testing and treatment to help you recover and be your best, healthiest self.

Our first method of testing for your biological age is epigenetic testing.

Epigenetics is the study of how factors like your habits, actions, and physical environment can affect the way that your genes work and are expressed. The difference between genetics and epigenetics is that while DNA sequencing isn’t something that can be changed, how they are expressed (epigenetics) can be. These outside factors can influence whether specific genes are turned on or off, and as such they are a factor in the aging process. Because the expression can be changed, it is possible to reverse the signs of cell aging through intervention.

DNA chain breaking down

At Rezilir Health, we use epigenetic testing to measure a patient’s biological age, which is not the same as your chronological age. Unlike genetic testing, which is easily done through tests like 23 and Me, epigenetic testing not only looks at the actual genetic code, but which genes are expressed and how they are being expressed. The test that we use looks at 900,000 separate places on your DNA and determines if they have been affected by epigenetic factors. Additionally, that information is then entered into a sophisticated algorithm that is used to compute your biological age.

Once you learn your biological age, you can work with your healthcare professional to improve it via multiple different types of intervention. Lifestyle methods of interventions that can assist in reversing your biological age are:

It is estimated that it will take a minimum of two to three months of the right lifestyle changes alone to affect epigenetic change.

In addition to the above-listed lifestyle changes, the effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) on the reversal of epigenetic aging is an area of study that is gaining traction. Research shows that HBOT can have an impact on the aging process of the body in more than one way, and in fact, it is being referred to by some as the “Holy Grail” of aging.

HBOT is the process of introducing increased amounts of pure oxygen to an individual while their body is subjected to higher atmospheric pressure. The higher atmospheric pressure, or ATA, allows the lungs to dissolve the oxygen more completely and deliver those higher concentrations more effectively into the blood. As a result, tissues are able to absorb the increased oxygen which aids in healing of damaged tissues, decreasing inflammation, and fighting infections.

The decrease in inflammation in the body is a result of the genes that are responsible for controlling it being turned off through the application of HBOT. Because inflammation is a key factor that drives the aging process, arresting the process can slow, and eventually reverse, the signs of aging as the body heals.

Epigenetic change via HBOT usually requires at least 40-60 sessions with no more than three days between in order to begin seeing the desired results, and it is believed that maintenance sessions after the completed treatment plan are beneficial as well.

HBOT Hard Chamber at Rezilir Health

Rezilir Health offers hard chamber HBOT for both patients and non-patients. Before anyone can receive hyperbaric therapy they must be assessed to ensure that their body can tolerate the increased ATA, and that is an assessment that we are able to offer onsite as well.
